Dr. Stanislav D. Zakharov, Senior Research Associate, Postdoctoral Associate Dr. Sandeep K. Singh, and Research Assistant Sejuti Naurin, left , center , and right in the picture, in the laboratory of W. A. Cramer, have completed studies on paradigm-changing studies in two major areas of membrane protein structure-function:
(1) In the Journal of Biological Chemistry, PMID: 27539852; doi: 10.1074/jbc.M116.732545 http://dx.doi.org/10.1074/jbc.M116.732545, Singh et al. have described a structure-based interaction for trans-membrane signaling and transfer of information via the central hetero-oligomeric cytochrome membrane protein complex, which underlies the utilization of light energy in photosynthesis;
(2) In a different problem related to basic mechanisms of infectious disease, to be published in the journal Biochemistry (PMID:27536862), Zakharov et al. have provided new structure-based information that bears on the interaction of a bacterial toxin, 3colicin," with a major cellular drug export protein, which constitutes a major advance in the understanding of the mechanism of cellular import of this cytotoxin.
